the rain

if there was a weather that I have an extreme love/hate relationship with, it’s rain.

I abhor the rain because it makes everything wet and all the smells that are activated when wet

drive me crazy…

double entendre

i digress

i LOVE the rain because of the sound that it makes

hard or gentle

there’s something calming about the sound of rain that soothes the deepest parts of me…

i digress

there are seasons in life

and the season most people hate the MOST is the rainy season

it’s the season that everything happens all at once

everything is saturated

which makes it heavy

everything is slippery

things are moving

there can be lightning

there can be fallen leaves and tree limbs…

a mess

yet, at the same time

there’s a certain calm about

having control over nothing

during a rainy season

that allows the deepest parts of you to rest;

the paradoxical “calm in the storm”…

there’s a repetitious, systematic, almost melodious cacophony of rhythmic vibrations

that soothe

what the rain unsettles.

this rain

though, to most, bothersome…

produces some of the most fertile, productive, and flavorful

harvests in your life.

chaos and calm

controlled and slippery

hard and soft

still yet rhythmic

the rain

often comes to soften and bring life to what the sun made hard.

the same sun that hardens the clay, melts the wax…

let the substance, of who I am, remain in spite of fluctuating seasons or circumstances.

after this rainy season, let the substance of who I am be planted.

let all the worry, stress, and anxieties wash away.

and though i personally abhor the rain,

when it’s all done,

let the purest form of who I was created to be

remain.
